October 18th: KIDS IN THE HALL: BRAIN CANDY (Kelly Makin, 1996)

A pharmaceutical company releases an antidepressant with dangerous side effects alters the lives of various employees as well as users of the drug.

The Kids In The Hall were a Canadian sketch comedy troupe who had a successful show on local as well as American cableTV from the late 90s to the mid-80s.

Partway through the pre-production process, internal disputes led founding member Dave Foley to quit the group, joining the cast of the network show NewsRadio, and was not present for the completion of the screenplay. Due to contractual obligations, he did act in the film.

All five members of the group play multiple roles, making up most of the characters in the film with speaking parts. Some memorable characters from the TV show were brought back and added to the story, also written by the troupe. Like their comedy forbearers Monty Python, most of the members played characters in drag.

The film was shot in Toronto, Canada.

Paramount Pictures was apparently uncomfortable with some of the film's potentially offensive humor, and apparently because of the troupe's unwillingness to censor themselves, the studio under-promoted the film, resulting in a poor showing at the box office.

Running time is 90 minutes.
