March 31st: YOU AND THE NIGHT (Yann Gonzalez, 2013)

A couple hosts an orgy with archetypal guests: The Stud, The Slut, The Star, and The Teen, who all reveal their innermost secrets and fantasies.

Writer-director Yann Gonzalez is a member of his brother Anthony's synthpop band M83, and made a series of short films (winning several awards) before embarking on his first feature.

Gonzalez shopped his screenplay around for several years before finding funding, and held out until he was able to shoot on 35mm film instead of digital.

Appearing heavily influenced by 1970s European horror films and 1980s music videos on the surface, Gonzalez draws from a variety of cinematic forebearers, including Peter Greenaway, Jean Cocteau, Luis Buñuel, Kenneth Anger, and Dario Argento.

The cast is made up of mostly young French actors, as well as veteran Béatrice Dalle (Betty Blue), American actress Kate Moran, and former football player Eric Cantona. The son of 1960s matinee idol Alain Delon appears in his second feature.

The musical score was composed and performed by M83, the Gonzalez brothers collaborating again, utilizing a full orchestra.

The film premiered during the "Critic's Week" section of the Cannes Film Festival, and won Best Film awards at the Athens International and Milan film festivals.

Running time is approx. 90 minutes.
